Allies of New France, the Potawatomi Indians played a major role in the development of the fur trade and the colonial struggle for North America. By the late 18th century they occupied a broad territory stretching from Milwaukee to Detroit. Today the Potawatomis occupy lands in Kansas and Oklahoma, while smaller communities reside in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Canada.
