New Born Care

In this book, authors discussed about the life of the family changes with the arrival of their newborn. Labour, birth and the immediate postnatal period are the most critical for newborn and maternal survival. Studies have evidenced that newborn lives can be saved by the use of simple interventions. Care of all newborns includes immediate and thorough drying of the newborn baby's skin, skin to skin attachment of the newborn with the mother, clamping the cord within the first minutes after birth, early initiation of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding. Nurses act as catalyst for any change in the community. They play an important role in educating and preparing the community specially the mothers to care for a newborn. Newborn care programmes can be organized in all departments covering health workers, families and significant others. Nurses in the obstetrical inpatient and outpatient departments should ensure that all antenatal mothers are educated on newborn care. Nurses in the community can utilize the educational module to teach the field workers on newborn care.
