Consequences

Dodo Collections brings you another classic from E.M. Delafield, 'Consequences.' This is a beautifully written account of a young girl who is unable to fit into the conventional mold demanded by her family and social class. A prickly, difficult personality with no leavening of humor to lighten her circumstances, Alex finds her only relief in the crushes she develops on friends at school and various acquaintances. Her feelings of devotion to the Superior of a local convent lead her to enter the order but her vocation lasts only as long as the object of her devotion remains as Mother Superior and her life becomes increasingly bleak and difficult. Edmee Elizabeth Monica Dashwood, nee de la Pasture (9 June 1890 2 December 1943), commonly known as E. M. Delafield, was a prolific English author who is best-known for her largely autobiographical Diary of a Provincial Lady, which took the form of a journal of the life of an upper-middle class Englishwoman living mostly in a Devon village of the 1930s, and its sequels in which the Provincial Lady buys a flat in London and travels to America. Other sequels of note are her experiences looking for war-work during the Phoney War in 1939, and her experiences as a tourist in the Soviet Union.
