Detailed information

The Golden Ass, or Metamorphoses, is the only Latin novel to survive complete from antiquity and a dazzling fusion of comic adventure, erotic farce, folklore, and religious allegory. Its narrator, Lucius, driven by curiosity about magic, is transformed into a donkey and passes through a series of grotesque, violent, and satirical episodes before his restoration through the goddess Isis. Written in an exuberant, learned, and often baroque Latin style, the work stands at the crossroads of Greco-Roman romance, Milesian tales, and mystery religion, culminating in the celebrated inset tale of Cupid and Psyche. Lucius Apuleius of Madaurus was a second-century North African intellectual, rhetorician, Platonist philosopher, and initiate in religious cults, whose cosmopolitan education shaped the novel's range and ambition. His fascination with magic, philosophy, performance, and spiritual transformation is unmistakable; indeed, his own trial on charges of sorcery lends intriguing biographical resonance to the book's preoccupation with forbidden knowledge and metamorphosis. This book is highly recommended to readers interested in classical literature, the history of the novel, ancient religion, or sophisticated comic fiction. It remains startlingly modern in its narrative energy, psychological insight, and meditation on desire, error, suffering, and redemption.
