Detailed information

Facial defects can result from trauma, treatment of neoplasms or congenital malformations. These acquired or congenital defects of the face create an unfortunate condition for the individual to lead a comfortable life. Treatment of a facial defect is a collaborated effort by the surgeon and the prosthodontist.Maxillofacial prosthetics is the sub branch of prosthodontics that deals with the treatment and restoration of tissues of the stomatogathic system and associated facial features. The objective of any maxillofacial prosthesis is to restore the aesthetics and function of tissues allowing the patient to lead an improved quality of life. Majority of the facial defects referred to a prosthodontist are the result of surgical resection of tumours.Unfortunately, many of the surgical techniques are extensive and thus leave large surgical defects that compromise not only function and aesthetics but also the psychological status of the patient. This article presents a systemic review of the evolution, current trends, and future requirements in maxillofacial materials for ensuring psychological well being.
