Part I of this book gives particular attention to freedom as an &quote;aesthetic idea&quote; that informs certain philosophical discussions of freedom in Kant, Schelling, Nietzsche, Sartre, Camus and Isaiah Berlin. The critical concept of &quote;positive freedom&quote; is discussed in the first chapter and continues to inform the entire book. In Part II, the more &quote;practical&quote; application of these ideas with respect to certain &quote;zones&quote; of freedom such as academia (&quote;academic freedom&quote;), religion (&quote;religious freedom&quote;), art (&quote;artistic freedom&quote;), &quote;free speech,&quote; and &quote;political freedom&quote; are discussed Finally, in the Epilogue, the surprising relationship of &quote;friendship&quote; to &quote;freedom&quote; that begins with their close etymological relationship is discussed.
