L'ultime acte de l'engagement de la 2. Panzer-Division au coeur de la bataille de Normandie commence le 13 août 1944 dans le Tome III de la série de trois ouvrages sur l'unité blindée allemande. Le transfert entre Alençon et Argentan inscrit l'unité dans un épuisement de ses forces combattantes au cours d'une semaine de repli dramatique. Après les illusions de contre-attaque et les espoirs de résistance en Normandie, il faut désormais, au Kommandeur von Lüttwitz, éviter l'anéantissement de sa Panzer-Division dans l'encerclement de la Poche de Falaise-Argentan. Les pertes de l'unité sur les berges de la Dives sont lourdes mais la 2. Panzer-Division parvient à s'extraire du Kessel pour traverser la Seine à la fin août 1944. Un lent repli s'amorce en direction de la frontière allemande vers une reformation indispensable pour une unité très affaiblie.

The final act of the 2. Panzer-Division's engagement in the heart of the Battle of Normandy began on August 13, 1944. The transfer between Alençon and Argentan exhausted the unit's fighting forces during a week of dramatic withdrawal. After the illusions of a counter-attack and the hopes of resistance in Normandy, Kommandeur von Lüttwitz had to then avoid the annihilation of his Panzer-Division in the Falaise-Argentan pocket. The losses of the unit on the banks of the Dives were heavy but the armored unit managed to escape to cross the Seine at the end of August 1944. This was followed by a slow withdrawal of the very weakened unit towards the German border, and a need for essential reform.
