Detailed information

Alveolar ridge as a part of the periodontium plays an integral role in the maintenance of both the natural dentition and dental implants. An adequate volume of bone at the site of prosthesis is a necessary to ensure favourable biomechanics and long term esthetic outcome. Large bone defects include segmental or large cortical defects created by trauma, infection, tumor resection, aseptic loosening around implants and skeletal abnormalities as Critical size defect (CSD). Treatment of large bone defects include distraction osteogenesis and bone transport, or bone grafting GBR (membrane technology), including autologous bone grafts, bone marrow aspirate, allografts,Osteoconduction with bone or a bone substitutes or growth factors. Guided bone regeneration has proven to be successful in a variety of experimental animal models. The efficacy of membranes in conjunction with bone healing and reconstructive therapy is probably the result of a combination of different mechanisms - mechanical, cellular, and molecular. Thus the concepts of GBR are widely applied to various fields in dentistry due to its highly predictable results. .
