A discovery in Gale Crater leads to a rush to the Red Planet. Mining exploration companies proliferate. The markets soars in frenetic anticipation. But the initial surge fizzles. A flood of privately funded, robotic mining ventures follow. The later lead to the formation of Martian colonies--and domed cities. Ultimately, the city states unite to establish an independent Federation of Ares.
